Bringing Ulster-Scots to the Classroom
The Northern Ireland curriculum provides opportunities for schools to embed teaching and learning about Ulster-Scots into their curriculum-based activities.
With this in mind, the Ulster-Scots Agency has created a range of resources which are freely available for teachers to use to support their lessons and activities. We regularly add to our Ulster-Scots resources, covering areas of language, culture, and history.
The Agency also has several programmes designed to help schools offer learning experiences related to Ulster-Scots culture and heritage, and which can be embedded in the school curriculum. Our programmes are structured, offering initial experiences through After-Schools Clubs, with more detailed learning through our Flagship Programme.
We provide grants to schools for music and highland dance tuition. Led by qualified tutors, the tuition supports students as they learn and develop new skills in areas of Ulster-Scots culture and heritage.
There is a wealth of resources available to schools which have been designed to help deliver teaching aspects of Ulster-Scots language, culture and heritage. Below is a selection of these resources and each month we’ll select one of these to highlight how it can assist with lessons.
Google Classroom
We are currently developing an Ulster-Scots Google Classroom. This virtual classroom will also showcase resources to help embed Ulster-Scots in the curriculum and will contain resources for Foundation to Post-16 students.
Teachers will be able to download resources and use them in their own classrooms digitally or as hard copies.
