Bringing Ulster-Scots to the Community

The Ulster-Scots Agency provides support for youth and community organisations through the delivery of workshops around Ulster-Scots language, culture and heritage.

In collaboration with The Boys’ Brigade, The Girls’ Brigade, The Girl Guides and The Scouts, Ulster-Scots programmes of study for badgework have been developed. The Agency can provide additional support by delivering workshops related to the course content or putting you in touch with local musicians to help enhance the programme.

Community and faith-based organisations also avail of our bespoke learning opportunities.  Members of our Education Team have delivered language, history and culture sessions to a diverse audience such as the Women’s Institute, Men’s Shed, Women’s Groups and Historical Societies.

Open College Network (OCN)

The Ulster-Scots Agency supports Ulster-Scots Music Tuition through an annual community funding programme. This is open to voluntary and community groups, and the programme supports a wide genre of Ulster-Scots traditional music, including bagpipes, drumming, flute, fife, Lambeg drumming, accordion, and drum major tuition.

We support a selection of programmes accredited by recognised authorities, including the Open College Network (OCN).

Dinnae houl yer wheest

In response to growing demand, the Ulster-Scots Agency has created a six-week introductory course to the Ulster-Scots language – Dinnae Houl Yer Wheest.

The course covers all aspects of literacy: speaking, reading, writing and listening. Students are encouraged to join the ‘Dinnae Houl Yer Wheest!’ online group, where classroom learning is embedded into day-to-day communication.

This free course is a fun and interactive way to encourage people of all ages to get to grips with the Ulster-Scots language in a very practical way.
